Year: 2016
Type: article
Abstract: In this study we explore teacher perceptions of cultural diversity management.Participants included sixteen teachers with experience rangingfrom 2 to 20 years of teaching from four secondary schools in the region ofAndalusia. Semistructured interviews with the teachers from each schoolwere used. Additional information was obtained through interviews withthe principal, four families of immigrant students and a focus-group interview with the four school counselors. The results indicate that teachersperceive the management of cultural diversity as a particular problem, marginal and excluded from teaching practices. Moreover, teachersagree that the issue is one of adaptation, a problem to be solved by thestudents themselves with the support of school counselors and other educational specialists. The study ends by calling for further work in coordination with educational specialists and highlighting the need to include intercultural competence in initial and continuing teacher education.
