Abstract: This article surveys critically the theoretical debates that have occupied Marxist economists in Britain during recent years. In order to understand the debates it is necessary to clarify two things: how Marx saw the structure of the capitalist economy, and what is the structure of Marx's Capital. These will give us a benchmark for evaluating the contributions of the new Marxist economists.
