Surgical Treatment of Ischemic Heart Disease in the Elderly
Year: 2003
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The number of Americans over the age of 70 is steadily increasing. To meet the needs of this segment of the population, cardiac surgery centers have been broadening their inclusion criteria for coronary revascularization in the elderly. We have learned new lessons about both the successes and limitations of surgical treatment for coronary disease in this population. Patients who, just one decade ago, would not have been considered suitable surgical candidates are enjoying good outcomes today. Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting is proving to be safer and less expensive than revascularization with cardiopulmonary bypass. Although risks of complications and hospital costs are higher in this population, the benefits of surgical intervention compared to medical treatment are clear in selected elderly patients. In this chapter, we will review the current literature on coronary revascularization in septuagenarians and octogenarians.
