Exploring the Neurobiological and Cognitive Correlates of Non-motor Symptoms in Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract: Non-motor symptoms have a major impact on the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), particularly neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive impairment, which have been observed even in the early stages of the disease.The main aim of this thesis was to explore the cognitive and neural correlates of neuropsychiatric symptoms and to identify the neural damage causing cognitive impairment in PD without dementia.The neuropsychiatric inventory and a battery of neuropsychological tests were used, while voxel-based morphometry of volumetric brain scans was used to detect volumetric associations.Depression and apathy were the most common neuropsychiatric symptoms.
