Prognosis of Patients with Peripheral and Coronary Atherosclerotic Disease

Year: 2008
Type: dissertation
Abstract: PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE (PAD) affects\nmore than 30 million people worldwide. In the United\nStates, more than 8 million people suffer from this\ndisease. The American College of Cardiology and the\nAmerican Heart Association have recognized the\nimportance of identifying and treating this disease and\nhave initiated national campaigns to increase its\nawareness. Many patients, however, do not exhibit\nwarning signs of the disease and remain undiagnosed.\nThese missed diagnoses create a major health burden.\nWhen left untreated, PAD can lead to walking\nimpairment and in more severe stages, to gangrene and\nleg amputation. Patients with PAD often have\natherosclerotic disease in other parts of the body, which\nplaces the patient at risk for myocardial infarction,\nstroke and death. Especially coronary artery disease has\nbeen recognized as a complice of PAD. This thesis\nprovides an insight in the prognosis of patients with\nperipheral and coronary artery disease and attempts to\nfind solutions in improving the identification and\nmanagement of this disease.
