Abstract: It has appeared to me most beneficial, as well as most simple, that your attention should be\ncalled on this occasion to the third branch of our objects, to wit,\nthat of Public Health, a subject which although but of recent introduction,\nis now recognised as of vast importance to the individual as\nwell as to the state, and in regard to which, the nature of my\nown pursuits, having had some practical connexion with many\nof the subjects which it includes, I may feel myself enabled to appreciate\nmore accurately what the Society has accomplished within that\nfield, and to indicate with more confidence the direction in which,\nas I believe, the labours of our members may be most usefully\ndirected.
