Abstract: This work aims to analyze the published works on nurse stress and contribute to the understanding of stress implications in the routine of this professional. An analysis was done on the articles found in Brazilian journals of Nursing and Psychology indexed by Lilacs, Medline and SciELO, articles of international journals indexed by free internet access as we/1 as national books, dissertations and theses that discuss stress. We found a growing interest on the theme as we/1 as a rising number of publications yet with few references specifically aimed at nurses once that most authors are involved in academic activities since they are more oriented to research. Many instruments were used to collect data: LIPP Stress Symptom /nventory, Visual Analogical Scale, and the Stress Profile lnventory The main factors causing stress were the double work shift, high responsibility, work with severe patients, lack of qualified personnel and high patient demands among others. Thus, institutions should be more concerned regarding the activities of the nurse, professionals who carry out their activities in different work shifts. lt is necessary to investigate stress causing agents in the workplace and measures to face such situations, promoting benefits not only to the nurses but to ai! individuais to whom they attend.
