Native Affairs in Natal

Year: 1905
Type: article
Abstract: THE colony of Natal for administrative purposes now includes Zululand, and the Blue Book for Native Affairs (1904) before us deals with both: Zululand consisting of eleven magistracies, while Natal is divided into thirty.Annexed to the various reports is a very complete list of Native chiefs, with the names of their tribes, and the number of huts in each division, also the salaries paid to the chiefs by Government. There are 312 tribes in all.The natives are settled either in Locations, on Crown Lands, Private Lands, or Mission Reserves. The distribution is somewhat irregular-having been arranged, to some extent at least, on the principle of Divide et impera." Many of the tribes not only extend into several Magisterial Divisions, but members of the same tribe are frequently to be found living under different conditions of land tenure. Thus a Chief may have a portion of his tribe in a location, another portion on private farms, another on unalienated Crown Lands or Mission Reserve. . . .
