Abstract: In the past there was little incentive for hospital providers to monitor patient safety\nand resource utilization. Hospital systems were simply not receptive to concepts\nrelated to quality of care and process management. This has changed dramatically\nthroughout the last century. National and international attention to quality\nproblems such as substandard care, variations in care, and waiting times has made\nhospital management and medical specialists aware that the way hospital care is\ndelivered needs to be reorganised.
