Abstract: In Experiment I, 3 groups of rats were trained and then tested in the Hebb-Williams maze. Animals in group I were trained to achieve the goal-orientation in the closed field where the blocks were removed. Animals in group 2 were permitted to explore the closed field without reward. Animals in group 3 were trained in the same conditions as in the Hebb-Williams test. When the Hebb-Williams test was performed, the error-scores in group 2 were as few as those of group 3.Further analysis of the mechanism of latent learning was made in Experiments II and III. One block was situated in the closed field. The animals which could only look at this block did not show such good performance in the Hebb-Williams test as revealed by those which were permitted to make a detour and avoid this block.
