Abstract: After a stroke, cortical and sub-cortical lesions give symptoms which language disorders - aphasia - in several cases. The aim of acute and specialized stroke care is related to the creation of Stroke Units. Speech therapist is involved in early treatment requiring linguistic evaluation adapted to this post-stroke context. According to mainstream studies, the initial severity of aphasia and its recovery in sub-acute phase differ from general and individual factors. This pilot study has investigate the severity of the language disorders, using a fast screening test - the Language Screening Test (LAST) - on patients hospitalized in Bordeaux university hospital. We proposed them a linguistic assessment 3 months after stroke using the french battery HDAE, adapted from the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE), to estimate the language recovery. Results show the importance of the LAST reflecting the severity of aphasia, just after and 3 months after stroke. Some linguistic items are also correlated with aphasia recovery (ASRS>3) and clinical pattern of aphasia 3 months after stroke. Correlations are also described between clinical elements in acute phase and the aphasia's severity.
