Abstract: The aim of this study was to introduce a Swedish translation of an instrument for assessing the functions of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI).The instrument chosen was the Inventory of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (ISAS), which is a two-factor self-report instrument measuring the intrapersonal and interpersonal functions of NSSI.The ISAS has shown reliability and validity in a previous American functional study of a non-clinical sample.Self-reported functions and characteristics of NSSI were examined in 22 adolescent and young adult women with multimodal psychiatric diagnoses and very high levels of self-injury.Participants reported use of several NSSI methods, early onset, experience of pain sometimes, performing NSSI mostly alone, short time from impulse to action and that most of them wanted to stop self-harming.This study hypothezised that the intrapersonal function and specifically the affect-regulation subfunction would be endorsed by a majority of the participants. Results supported that the intrapersonal function as well as its subfunction affect-regulation both were rated as primary functions which is consistent with previous research. Results also support excellent internal consistency för ISAS and this study suggests this instrument is a useful self-report measure for clinicians and young patients to understand NSSI.The small sample size of participants is a limitation of this study and further research using the ISAS in larger clinical samples is warranted.
