The tense-aspect systems of European languages in a typological perspective
Year: 2000
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: this paper, I will discuss a further notion, that of a gram family, which finds its application primarily in areal linguistics. A gram family is basically a set of languagespecific grams that can be hypothesized to have arisen through one and the same historical process--either by being inherited from a common parent language or as a result of language contact. Gram families, then, differ from gram types in having a location in time and space rather than being universally available, as the latter are.
