Venturing Beyond the Sentence Level: Narrative Skills in Children with Hearing Loss

Year: 2010
Type: article
Abstract: study looking at the effectiveness of listening and spoken language intervention, indicating significant improvements after beginning therapy. Finally, a review of the new text, "Auditory-Verbal Practice: Toward a Family-Centered Approach," discusses the merits of engaging the family unit in a child's development of listening and spoken language. As an added bonus, we have included the proceedings of the 2010 AG Bell Research Symposium, "Re-Modeling the Deafened Cochlea for Auditory Sensation: Advances and Obstacles."The presenters offer an overview on the advancements and limitations of stem cell and cochlear sensory cell regeneration, providing insights into the future of this line of research. As we wrap up 2010, exploring the language development of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing has never been more important. And while a large number of studies exist that specifically focused on auditoryverbal practice, the results do not provide conclusive evidence of success on a broader level. We encourage you and your colleagues to consider contributing to this body of research with a large-scale case study that explores the positive, and negative, results of auditory-verbal practice to provide rigorous, scientific evidence of the strength of this communication approach. We hope you enjoy this issue, and please don't hesitate to contribute to The Volta Review .
