The human suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in a periodic environment

Year: 1994
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: The human suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is a small structure (0.25mrn ), situated on top of the optic chiasm. It is not possible to reliably localize it in conventionally stained sections in the human brain (38), but shows up clearly following staining of its peptidergic neurotransmitters, e. g. vasopressin (VP) (36) or vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) (27, 21). These peptides are stable in postmortem material. The human biological clock with its circadian and circannual rhythms is involved in the various stages of life in different processes, i. e. brain development, birth, reproduction, and affected in aging and Alzheimer's disease.
