Abstract: French statistical planning data cover the availability of psychiatric care and the known characteristics of persons resorting to care (including particularly the prevalence of the main mental disorders) within the general populations or more targeted groups (e.g. prisoners, children). After summarizing the main recent contributions of psychiatric statistics, the article surveys the principal data sources. The limitations of current work are, however, also emphasised. Two particularly significant knowledge gaps are identified. First, the statistical information system with respect to psychiatry and mental health generally will need in the future to develop work on themes such as medico-economic evaluation of prevention and care, life quality of patients and carers, psychical diseases among specific population groups and their behaviour in accessing care, and transnational comparisons. Secondly, coordination, data sharing and joint analysis must be developed among research teams in order to improve use of available data.
