Abstract: Burlesque performance began as a titillating form of entertainment for male audiences, but the burgeoning neo-burlesque movement has reimagined the oldfashioned striptease as a female-driven, and even feminist, performance medium, now enjoyed by just as many women as men.Utilizing a wide range of texts and archival materials, as well as original interviews conducted with burlesque performers and personal "hands-on" experiences in the world of burlesque and striptease, I consider the past, present, and potential future of burlesque performance, examining the role of the female spectator, the relationship between burlesque performance and contemporary consumer culture (including modern pinup photography like SuicideGirls), and the possibilities and problems of neoburlesque as a site of feminist expression.iii To Byron -always a helpful research assistant.
