Abstract: Perioperative myocardial infarction (PMI) is one of the most important predictors of short- and\nlong term morbidity and mortality associated with noncardiac surgery3‑6. Prevention of a PMI\nis therefore key to improving overall postoperative outcome. Unfortunately, the exact mechanism\nof PMI is not fully understood and remains a subject of continued debate3,4,6. Chapter\none describes the current understanding of the pathophysiology of perioperative myocardial\ninfarctions.
