Abstract: PROBLEMSVon Restorff, H. (1933) found that when many homogeneous terms and a few heterogeneous or isolated terms were included in a list, the heterogeneous or isolated terms were recalled more easily than the homogeneous terms. We could also notice certainly the effect of the isolated term when we used Restorff's method (Tatuno, 1956).On the other hand, Obonai, T., and Tatuno, T. confirmed that in the Ranschburg's phenomenon, two identical terms were recalled more easily when they were adjacent to each other (Obonai & Tatuno, 1954; Obonai, 1960).Therefore, it was hypothesized that the effect of the isolated term and that of the identical term had something in common.Relying on our previous studies, the present author intended to examine more in detail the effect of the isolated term and that of the identical term, and the spread of the effect, and to explain the relations between these two effects.EXPERIMENT I.
