Abstract: Psychosocial factors play an integral role in the management of diabetes in both children and adults. A number of psychosocial therapies can improve regimen adherence, glycemic control, psychosocial functioning, and quality of life. Many diabetic patients and their families have high rates of emotional disturbances and behavioral problems. Especially, hypoglycemia in children and chronic hyperglycemia in older diabetics cause significant neuropsychological impairment. Psychiatric interventions include pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, empowerment program, self-management training, stress management, and biofeedback etc. A multidisciplinary team approach, including physicians, mental health professionals, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, and others, is needed for diabetics with some psychosocial issues.
