Type: article
Abstract: Objectives:An effective screening tool needs high sensitivity and specificity and consumes less time to administer\nto improve an early diagnosis of depressive patients in psychiatric and primary care setting. The aim of this study were\nto examine the reliability and the validity of the Korean version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9(PHQ-9) well known\nas a commonly used screening tool for depression.\nMethods:A total of seventy-four outpatients(n=67) and inpatients(n=7) diagnosed as major depressive disorder by\nMini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus(MINI-Plus) in the department of psychiatry of Dong-San Medical Center\nperformed the PHQ-9, PHQ-2, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HRSD).\nSeventy-five individuals working in Dong-San Medical Center of a normal control group performed the PHQ-2 and\nPHQ-9.\nResults:The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were 0.95, 0.91. In comparison of mean scores of the\nPHQ-9 between major depressive disorder group and control groups, the differences between groups were statistically\nsignificant. In addition, correlation of the total scores of other depression scales with the PHQ-9 was statistically\nsignificant. The optimal cut-off point for major depression was 9 in PHQ-9(Sensitivity : 88.5%, Specificity : 94.7%).\nConclusion:The Korean version of PHQ-9 have a good reliability and validity. The PHQ-9 would play a role of brief\nand useful measure for screening depression.\nKEY WORDS:Depression · Screening tool · PHQ-9 · Sensitivity · Specificity.
