Abstract: Recent studies of CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-expressing T cells have shown dramatic results in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia as well as activity in B-cell lymphoma.1,2,3 These highly publicized studies have led to the hope that CAR T cells can be used to treat other hematological malignancies and solid tumors as well. The article by Ritchie et al. in this issue4 shows how the approach can be adapted for the treatment of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and illustrates that significant obstacles remain before this biological therapy will become a mainstay of treatment.
