Abstract: Attempts to prevent or minimise psychological \nmorbidity following traumatic events have resulted in \ncalls for the routine provision of early psychological \nintervention for the victims of trauma. These calls are \nbased on the hypothesis that the earlier intervention \noccurs, the less opportunity there is for maladaptive \nand disruptive cognitive and behavioural patterns to \nbecome established (Rachman, 1980). \nEarly interventions are intuitively appealing and a \nresponse to perceived need, but do they work? This \npaper focuses on the evidence for the effectiveness \nof psychological debriefing (PD) which is probably \nthe most widely advocated preventative intervention \nat present.
