Mythologie, histoire et masques
Year: 1989
Type: article
Abstract: Masks and mythology. The Dogon bring out masks during major rites and funeral ceremonies. Since Marcel Griaule's interest, early during his field work, in Dogon masks, research continued year after year. In 1947, the Dogon assigned someone to explain their way of thinking and cosmogony to Griaule ; Dieu d'eau is the exact translation of the information garnered from Ogotemmêli. During a subsequent phase of work, still under way even though Le Renard pâle presented initial results, it has been necessary to re-examine all the masks with the help of Dogon informants. Herein, certain masks are presented in line with this sort of analysis.
