Abstract: ZntroductionVitamin E,t a member of the group of fat-soluble vitamins, was discovered in the 1920s.A classical vitamin E deficiency has not been described in man, however, except in cases of defective fat absorption, in some premature infants and in some children suffering from protein-calorie maln~trition.l-~Although the tocopherols are generally considered to be biological antioxidants, Dinning and Day4 observed in 1957 that the nutritional anemia that appears in Rhesus monkeys maintained on a tocopherol-deficient diet is the result of a defect in the synthesis of heme and heme proteins.
