Abstract: Relative transmitting abilities of dairy sires for milk yield were estimated for models with: 1) no interaction, 2) interaction of sire by herd, and 3) interaction of sire by ideal weight for breeding heifers. There was a reduction in range of relative transmitting abilities when interaction was included in the model.High correlation coefficients between estimated relative transmitting abilities from models including or ignoring interaction, however, suggested only minor reranking of sires.ment (7) were edited such that each sire had at least 20 daughters (two sires had 19 daughters each) in two or more herds, and each herd had daughters of more than one sire.To study interaction of sire and herd, first lactation records were available on 2,988 cows by 55 sires in 418 herds. There were 1,737 filled sire-herd subclasses or 7.6% of the possible number. To investigate interaction of sire and IW, first lactation records were available on 1,759 cows by 52 sires in 220 herds. There were 1,090 filled sire-herd classes or 9.5% of the possible number.
