Abstract: Breast cancer has been listed as the second most common malignancy that leads to death in older women and has increased incidence with age. 1 Kantor and Houldin 2 noted that primary tumors detected in older women are usually less aggressive, but due to the delay in diagnosis, tumors tend to be at an advanced stage of malignancy on presentation and need more aggressive intervention.A recent study investigated this hypothesis and found that in a population of 12,000 older women (≥ 75 years of age), the primary tumors were larger and more advanced than cancers detected in women between the ages of 69 and 74. 3 Because older women tend to be diagnosed with larger, more advanced primary tumors, it becomes important to provide a noninvasive method to assess the extent of their disease.
