Possibilities and perspectives of Lithuanian spatial data spread
Year: 2010

Abstract: Spatial data infrastructures enable sharing spatial data and metadata that come from various sources independently of a location, format and structure of the source data. The development of such infrastructures was fostered by continuously growing need for spatial data. In Lithuania, such spatial information infrastructure LSII was built in 2009 to ensure the overall availability and interoperability of national public datasets, eliminate isolation and enable spatial data users to easily find and conveniently access the data they need. Along with national SDIs, European Spatial Information Infrastructure is developed for the interoperable sharing of important spatial data sets of all EU Member States. So far, different spatial data policies as well as technologies and methodologies of data management have been adopted in different countries. In order to solve this problem, uniform specifications for target data themes are developed within the framework of INSPIRE. Lithuanian spatial information infrastructure also will serve as a technological platform for obligatory INSPIRE data sharing. There are 56 official datasets matching INSPIRE themes in Lithuania. Although none of the datasets is fully compliant with INSPIRE data specifications, necessary transformations can be performed immediately before sharing.
