Promotional ballpens offered to orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists by medical device and pharmaceutical companies
Year: 2013
Type: article
Abstract: We prospectively collected promotion ballpens offered at industry exhibitions at the 2012 Annual Congresses of the Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Society (DKOU, Berlin) and the German Anaesthesia Society (DAC, Leipzig), to see whether medical device and pharmaceutical companies target members of different specialties differently. A total of 105 ballpens from 96/222 exhibitors (43%) were collected at the DKOU, whilst 71 ballpens from 59/132 (45%) exhibitors were collected at the DAC (Fig. 1; p > 0.05). Similar proportions wrote with blue (73% vs 75%), black (26% vs 23%) and multicoloured (1% vs 3%) ink (p > 0.05). We conclude that medical device and pharmaceutical companies view orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists in a similar light with respect to their note-taking abilities, and that orthopaedic surgeons and anaesthetists have more in common than some might have expected.
