Abstract: We sought to establish preliminary hemodynamic reference ranges for the normal late gestation human fetus, using phase contrast (PC) MRI with metric optimized gating (MOG) and T2 Oximetry. The major vessels of 33 late gestation normal fetuses (mean GA: 36.3 wk, SD 1.3 wk) were studied with PC MRI with MOG according to our previously published technique [1][3] on a commercial 1.5T MR system. Vessel T2s were converted to vessel oxygen saturations using population average hemoglobin concentration according to previous work [4,5]. Using umbilical vein and descending aorta T2 mapping and UV flow, we calculated fetal oxygen delivery and consumption. The relationships between the distribution of flow and vessel T2s were investigated using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The MRI results compared with literature reference data based on lamb measurements [6] are shown in table 1. DO2 = 20.8 ± 5.0 ml/min/kg (10.8–30.8), VO2 = 6.8 ± 1.8 ml/min/kg (3.2–10.4). MPA T2 correlated with PBF (r = 0.4, p = 0.02). UV T2 was proportional to DAo T2 (r = 0.43, p = 0.01). OP22.05: Table 1. Fetal flows and oximetry Human fetal hemodynamic assessment with PC MRI and T2 mapping is feasible and reveals many similarities between human and lamb fetal cardiovascular physiology, including hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and matching of oxygen delivery and consumption.
