Year: 1998
Type: article
Abstract: The effectiveness of suffering bodies: the resort to hunger strikes in France The analysis relies on both qualitative and quantitative data concerning hunger strikes in France since 1972. Who goes on hunger strikes in France and how? The article insists on the collective and individual forms of hunger striking, and distinguishes between different social groups that seem to use hunger strikes as privileged means of protest. To what extent can hunger striking be explained by the lack of any other means and resources? To what extent can it be explained by specific political socialization (both the hunger strikers’ and their audience’s) and in fact are these two explanations mutually exclusive? A methodological annex discusses the methodology of processing press data. Annex discusses the methodology of processing press data.
