“Party N Play” on the Internet: Subcultural Formation, Craigslist, and Escaping from Stigma
Year: 2014
Type: article
Abstract: This article describes how the war on drugs and the fight against AIDS battled in the gay community, particularly against those who use crystal methamphetamine and engage in risky sex practices (i.e., condomless sex), have resulted in unintended consequences. These wars have successfully defined these men (AKA “PnPers”) as “diseased” or “criminals” who should be demonized and ostracized. By posting ads on Craigslist anonymously soliciting or offering drugs and “risky” sex, they are able to engage in these behaviors without being further stigmatized and labeled, and they can “safely” circumvent the medicalization and criminalization of their behavior.
