Abstract: In the continuing search for fungal cultures having cell proliferation inhibitors,1>2) it was found that a culture extract of Aspergillus candidus showed pronounced inhibitory activity against sea urchin embryo cells. In the previous paper in this series, we reported new pterphenyls, candidusins A and B, as effective inhibitors of sea urchin embryonic development.Closer examination of the metabolites of Asp.candidus showed that the fungus produced three active compounds besides candidusins A andB.This paper deals with the isolation and characterization of the three bioactive compounds, together with the inhibitory effects on the embryosystem.Aspergillus candidus was inoculated on potato-dextroseagar plates (pH 5.0; dextrose content, 2%) and incubated for three weeks at 28°C.The cultures obtained from 100 plates (9cm O.D.) were soaked in acetone for a week at roomtemperature. The acetone solution was concentrated to give a brownish oil (1.5 g), which was subjected to silica gel column chromatography. The column was eluted stepwise with toluene-acetone in an increasing order of
