Creative Euphoria. Dionysos and the Theatre

Year: 1993
Type: article
Abstract: In doing so, Ancient theatre will cease to cause a problem, and its specific nature will appear to fit weIl into the complex of Dionysiac cult activity. Approaches to the problemThe dearth of investigations into the question of Dionysos' relationship with the theatre may be due to its associations with Nietzsche's Die Geburt der Tragodie. The answers to the question like those provided by Ridgeway, Dieterich, Harrison, Murray, or Nilsson earlier this century do not seem to further investigation either. Those who are no longer inspired by ideas of a heros cult and fertility demon rites, goat skin dancers, or by the eniautos daimon and his passion, nor by laments for the dead ancestors, will find few alternatives 4 .
