Abstract: As the authors of this well written paper point out, the boundary-value nature of the separated boundary layer problem has been recognised for some time.Various schemes have been devised for eliminating or avoiding the separation point singularity and matching some condition at the downstream boundary for two-dimensional or axisymmetric flows. However, most of those schemes offer little promise for extension to three-dimensional separated flows. The technique described in this paper appears to have overcome this barrier. For general three-dimensional flows, however, it is necessary to consider the variation of quantities in two lateral directions. In particular, a two-component pressure gradient model will be required. The utility of the author's technique would seem to be limited by the availability of analytical expressions for the inviscid pressure distribution. An even more important extension of the method would be to turbulent flows since that is apparently the only kind of experimental data available for comparison for anything but simple two-dimensional flows.Such an extension should be fairly straightforward.
