Abstract: This paper first presents a summary of the plethora of challenges that the globalised knowledge era is presenting to a broad spectrum of assumptions upon which business, governments and unions have based their actions and theories. It then turns to a more in-depth analysis of the challenges facing industrial relations practice and theories. A new theory of industrial relations is presented that seeks to both explain current responses by various parties and explores future responses. The theory presented is not a static explanation of practice, but rather a dynamic emergent concept capable of meeting the continuous changing knowledge era.
