Abstract: In addition to direct reference, Zulu names are often used indirectly, as a means of expressing opinions and concerns, giving warnings, raising suspicions, admonishing or chastizing individuals in a society which discourages direct confrontation. Examples and commentary on children's and animal's names used in this way are given.
