11: Therapeutic Manipulation of the Stem Cell Niche
Year: 2007
Type: article
Abstract: Altering stem cell function in normal and disease settings has implications for regenerative medicine and for the current practice of stem cell transplantation. Emphasis has generally been placed on the stem cell as a cell autonomous unit, however in vivo these cells are clearly responsive to distinct physiologic cues provided by their microenvironment. The ability of specific anatomic sites to provide regulatory input is what defines these sites as stem cell niches and offers a distinct set of targets for developing stem cell based therapeutics.
