Putting Students First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully

Year: 2007
Type: article
Abstract: Putting Students First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully, is the result of a three year long research project by the Braskamp, Trautvetter, and Ward. The authors use assessment instruments, phone interviews, and site visits to select ten faith-based colleges that promote "the kind of liberal learning that more secular institutions can only wish for." The extensive research for this book involved ten institutions: Bethune-Cookman College, Creighton University, Hamline University, Hope College, Pacific Lutheran University, The College of Wooster, Union University, the University of Dayton, Villanova University, and Whitworth College. These institutions were selected because they have put students first in their mission, shown a commitment to holistic development, demonstrated the desire to assist students in their faith development, and have been shaped by their link to a church denomination. While this book has chosen to focus on faith based institutions, it can be beneficial to professionals from any type of institution because it focuses on the idea of implementing challenge and support in all areas of the college.
