Abstract: The primary purpose of screening the large bowel is to detect invasive cancer early.Screening also can reveal the presence of large bowel adenomas, which most pathol ogists and clinicians with expertise in this field regard as precursors of coborectal can cer.'Two clinical trials are now under way to confirm the preliminary evidence that removal of colorectal adenomas can reduce the incidence of subsequent barge bowel cancer.2The available evidence is suffi cient to justify the development of diagnos tic and treatment strategies for detecting and removing coborectal adenomas.Polyps are visible growths that protrude from the mucosa of the large bowel.Of the several types of polyps that may arise in this tissue, only oneâ€"the neoplastic ade nomaâ€"is strongly associated with risk for transformation to invasive cancer.Adeno mas, particularly if multiple, also are asso ciated with an increased risk that invasive cancer may be present elsewhere in the large bowel.
