Abstract: This paper analyses the personal attitudes of a group of young Valencians towards some varieties of Spanish (septentrional Castilian and Canary) as well as Catalan (Valencian and Barceloni dialects). For the research, the author has chosen a bilingual speech community of Valencia in which, nevertheless, not all members are competent in both languages. The most significant conclusions of the research, made by means of the matched-quise technique, are the following: -There is a clear association between the psychosocial attributes of the social status and personal progress (winner, rich, inteligent, cultivated, inhabitant of urban cities...) with the standard variety of the Peninsular Spanish (the septentrional variety), whereas the Canarian dialect is more positively appreciated in other traits, specially those linked with human integrity (unaffected, nice, likeable, friendly...) -There is also a diglossic distribution between the attitudes towards Spanish and the Valencian variety of Catalan. Spanish is considered by the young as the language of prestige. Nevertheless, in the comparison between this work and some others made a decade ago, we observe now a progressive revaluation of the autochthnous linguistic variety (Valencian). -Finally, the comparison between the two dialects of the Catalan language analysed (Valencian and Barceloni, the principal variety of the neighbouring Catalonian region), shows that the former is perceived more positively in all the features considered.
