Abstract: This book is intended to "provide a nucleus of the knowledge necessary for training in surgical oncology and certification and should broaden the perspective of the general surgeon.other surgical specialists, non-surgeons and medical students in cancer therapy."The first twelve chapters relate to principles of surgical oncology and cover diverse topics, such as history, cancer epidemiology, the biology of metastases, and genetics in cancer.Appropriately, the staging of cancers, adjunctive measures in the surgical treatment of cancer and continuing care and follow-up of the cancer patient are listed.A multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care is described, with emphasis on the roles of the surgeon, pathologist, radiologist, medical oncologist, and plastic and reconstructive surgeons in cancer-patient care. The third section is devoted to the principles of management of specific tumors related to the organ site and the system involved.Eight chapters describe new advances in surgical oncology from research aspects to hyperthermia, infusional devices, intraoperative radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and the use of lasers in oncology.
