Abstract: Émile Zola’s novel Au bonheur des dames gives to consumptionitself the central role it would take vis-à-vis the system of production in the contemporary world. Our purpose is to examine in which way this novel renders life’s merchandization, viewed inthe context of the realistic legacy the author hands down to subsequent prose writers.
