Abstract: Monumental tombs in the Iwelen area. Archeological missions in the Iwelen area in the northeastern Air (Niger) have made it possible to not only date but also show, for the first time, the correlation between a type of monumental tomb (« crater tumuluses »), a habitat and Libyan Berber cave drawings from the chariot period. Thanks to the exploration of more than 60 funerary monuments, an outline has been drawn up of the evolution of ancient mortuary rites from the late Neolithic, ca. 3500 ВС for the oldest Iwelen tombs, till their abandonment as a result of the spread of islam to this area, ca. 700-800 A.D.
