Ligand K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies: metal-ligand covalency in transition metal tetrathiolates
Year: 1997
Type: article
Abstract: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the sulfur K-edge at ∼ 2460 eV has been applied to a series of S4M(SR)42− complexes (M Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(II) and Mn(II)) (R = 2-Ph-C6H4) to determine to covalency of the thiolate-metal bond. Previously, a methodology was developed for a TdMCl42−1 series (M Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) amd Fe(II)) which relates the intensity of the pre-edge feature to covalency. This study is now extended to metal tetrathiolates where S4 site symmetry is applied and there is anisotropic covalency in the thiolate valence orbitals. This research forms the foundation for future sulfur K-edge XAS studies of electronic structure in transition metal centers in proteins and model complexes.
