Abstract: Twenty-five years have passed since the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) launched the Journal of Orthopaedic Research.Wayne Akeson of UC San Diego and Wilson ''Toby'' Hayes of Harvard/MIT, the first co-editors, wrote in a note that appeared in the first issue that it was ''with considerable pride and some sense of relief'' that the first issue of the Journal rolled off the presses. The idea to start a multidisciplinary journal dedicated to orthopaedic research had been discussed by the ORS Long Range Planning Committee, chaired by Clement Sledge, and the ORS Executive Committee, under the leadership of Larry Rosenberg and then Van Mow.But it wasn't until considerable and at times heated discussions among the membership at the 1981 Annual Meeting that the decision to start the Journal was reached.Important questions were debated before a final acceptance vote by the membership: Could the ORS undertake such an expensive proposition as owning a journal? Was there a need for such a journal, given that other publications, such as the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, already dedicated considerable pages to research articles?Would a journal that spanned the field of orthopaedic research from biomechanics to gene therapy attract excellent manuscripts?Or, would authors and readers prefer more specialized journals? With the decision to move forward, Raven Press was selected as the publisher, because of both attractive financial terms and a strong record in medical books and orthopaedic journals.Van Mow and Jack Lewis negotiated the first publication contract.Since then, ORS leaders, most recently Adele Boskey and Rocky Tuan, have moved the Journal's publishing to Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, then to Elsevier, and on to our current publisher, Wiley, always striving for the highest quality combined with the most reasonable costs. The first contract included an agreement, established with Carl Brighton's support, between ORS and the Bioelectric Repair and Growth Society (BRAGS).Joint sponsorship by BRAGS and ORS was an important early step for the Journal as
