Abstract: Hugue, A. Ouellette Philadelphia, PA: Saunders Elsevier; 2010. $129.00; 824 pages; 700+ illustrations; Hardcover James Costello MD, PhD*, Diego R. Martin MD, PhD*, * Emory University School of Medicine Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In this textbook, The Teaching Files: Musculoskeletal, the author presents a case-based approach to the expansive field of musculoskeletal imaging. Four hundred well-illustrated discussions cover many important diagnoses of musculoskeletal through multiple-modality imaging. The case discussions run consecutively with no intervening chapter divisions. While the cases are not organized into sections, there does exist a clearly defined progression of subject matter. In the first half of the textbook, cases progress systematically by body region. The cases are presented sequentially from the spine, upper extremity, pelvis, and lastly, from the lower extremities. In the second half of the textbook, cases are presented according to subject. First, there are several cases covering benign and malignant neoplasms of the bone and soft tissues. The discussion then transitions to infection, arthritides, joint deposition disease, and developmental anomalies. Each case is presented by first providing the patient demographics and clinical history, then a description of the image findings, followed by a discussion. Within each discussion, the definition and background of each diagnosis is discussed. Characteristic clinical features are outlined and well annotated. Imaging findings are succinctly described and referenced to the accompanying high quality images. In addition, less common imaging manifestations of the diagnosis, which may not be highlighted on the accompanying illustrations, are described fully. Lastly, the author provides reference to important and accessible suggested reading. The author presents high quality images that show the diagnostic features clearly. The author makes a concerted effort to provide imaging examples using current techniques, including MRI. There is a wealth of MRI imaging using T1-weighted and fluid sensitive techniques, as well as contrast enhanced imaging for appropriate indications. The author also strives to provide a balanced multiple-modality perspective and emphasizes the importance of making a diagnosis using simpler x-ray radiography. As with all books published under the auspices of the Expert Consult heading, full access is given to an online copy of the text. All published high-quality images can be downloaded and helpful links are provided for suggested reading. With the ease of online-access, this book can be conveniently accessed from any computer with internet access, which further enhances its inherent value. In summary, this is a well-written textbook which provides an excellent multiple-modality case-based discussion of musculoskeletal imaging, including MRI. This textbook can be recommended, for example, as a useful study aid for residents preparing for their respective certification board examinations.
