Abstract: In this, the first of two articles, an attempt is made to form the construction of the socio-historic and philosophic context of the heresy against which Paul warns the Colossians in Colossians 2:8 is attempted. It is a argued that this construction is of utmost importance in the correct understanding and interpretation of the letter to the Colossians because of the central position the philosophical heresy and its refutation have in Colossians.
