Abstract: This paper presents and justifies the content worked in the extension course "The Visual Arts as a field of knowledge," which was sponsored by the Departamento Artístico Cultural – DAC/ UFSC, within the project "Arte na Escola". The course was directed at teachers of Art and also received other stakeholders in the study of Visual Arts, focusing on contemporary art. Art is justified as a field of knowledge in that, throughout its history, many have been developed knowledge, technologies and expertise applied to the development of artistic activities. In addition, each work of art represents a unique and innovative testimony of their time and offers a new set of knowledge, which broadens the cultural heritage of humanity. Finally, knowledge and artistic products are also applied in developing other areas of knowledge.
