Cytokine generation by human basophils
Year: 1994
Type: review
Abstract: The concept that basophils and mast cells participate in acute allergic reactions is based in part on evidence from studies demonstrating the rapid release of inflammatory mediators including histamine, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins after the activation of these cells by various stimuli. The role that basophils play in complex allergic disease states is less well understood, yet might best be explained by their role in the “late phase response” (LPR) to antigen. After the description of this phenomenon in the early 1970s by Dolovich et al.
